Eva grew up with her brother, Anthony Artukovich, in the Leimert Park/View Park area of Los Angeles, which is well-known for its tree-lined streets and beautiful Spanish Colonial and Mediterranean-style homes. In 1911, George and Mande were the second couple to be married in the new St. Anthony Croatian Catholic Church. Eva has wonderful memories of her grandfather’s cooking talents, especially his Christmas bread which he made every year in a huge old-fashioned metal washing pan. Eva attended grammar school at St. John the Evangelist Hyde Park, high school at St. Mary’s Academy, and college at Mount St. Mary’s College, where she majored in Home Economics (which may explain her love of cooking!). For several years after college, she worked in the credit department at Bullocks Wilshire. In 1951, she married Leo Majich, the love of her life, to whom she was married for 56 years until his death in 2008. They lived in Temple City until 1957 and then moved to Pasadena, where Eva has continued to live for 58 years. Eva and Leo raised 5 wonderful children – Theresa, Anthony, Tom, Paul and Evie – and have been blessed with 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. For many years, Eva was involved in volunteer work at the Little Sisters of the Poor in Boyle Heights and San Pedro, and was very active in her own parish, Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where she served as president of their Mother’s Club. During her marriage to Leo, she was involved in many projects at St. Anthony, sometimes far more than she wanted to be! Eva served as President of the St. Anthony Women’s Guild in XXXX. She loves to cook, entertain, do needlepoint, knit and travel. Eva is proud of her Croatian/Hercegovinian heritage and happy to lend a hand to the Croatian American Women’s Club.
